About this artwork

This colour woodblock print shows Arashiyama, the Kyoto location named in its title. Kobayashi Kiyochika made it in Japan in January 1897, and it belongs to his series Sketches of Famous Places in Japan. Kiyochika is known as an ukiyo-e artist whose prints and newspaper illustrations recorded Japan's rapid change during the Meiji period. Many collectors regard his work as the last significant example of ukiyo-e. Here, the focus is on a celebrated place rather than the modern scenes he was also known for.

On your wall: A fitting choice for a study, hallway or living room where you would like a calm Japanese landscape subject and a touch of traditional printmaking.

About Kobayashi Kiyochika

Kobayashi Kiyochika was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, known for colour woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations made during the Meiji period (1868–1912). His work records Japan's rapid modernisation, from red-brick buildings and trains to scenes of the First Sino-Japanese War. He used light and shade inspired by Western art, and many collectors regard his prints as the last significant ukiyo-e.
