About this artwork

This colour woodblock print shows Mount Yoshino in cherry blossom season, a subject also known by the alternate title Yoshino yama. It was made in Japan in April 1897 and belongs to the series Sketches of Famous Places in Japan. Kobayashi Kiyochika was an ukiyo-e artist known for his woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations, and for a sense of light and shade inspired by Western art. Many collectors regard his work as the last significant example of ukiyo-e. This print gives a quiet glimpse of a celebrated place in springtime.

On your wall: A spring landscape of blossom on a mountain, it would sit well in a calm living room, a study or a bedroom, especially where you like Japanese art.

About Kobayashi Kiyochika

Kobayashi Kiyochika was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, known for colour woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations made during the Meiji period (1868–1912). His work records Japan's rapid modernisation, from red-brick buildings and trains to scenes of the First Sino-Japanese War. He used light and shade inspired by Western art, and many collectors regard his prints as the last significant ukiyo-e.
