About this artwork

This is a brush drawing in colour on paper by Ohara Koson, made in Japan in the early twentieth century. It shows white lilies, two in bloom and three still in bud, so the eye moves from open petals to those yet to unfold. The drawing was prepared as a design for a print, which gives it the clear, deliberate feel of a work planned for reproduction. Koson was a painter and woodblock print designer working at the forefront of the shinsaku-hanga and shin-hanga movements. The work is 385 mm high and 262 mm wide, an upright format that suits the tall stems of its subject.

On your wall: Its white blooms and upright format suit calm spaces such as bedrooms, hallways, studies and bathrooms, particularly where a restrained, natural look is wanted.
