Mizuno Toshikata made this print in 1894, during the Meiji period, as part of the series Thirty-six Elegant Selections. Each print in the series features a woman from a different time period, which suits an artist with an interest in history painting. Most are set in the Edo period, and this one takes us to the Tenmei era, where the lady of the title pursues fireflies. It is a woodblock print, worked in ink and colour on paper. Toshikata was a favoured student of Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and took over his post as a newspaper illustrator.
On your wall: Its gentle subject and Japanese woodblock character suit a calm living room, a study or a bedroom, especially where you enjoy quiet, narrative pictures.
