Two birds share this composition: a white hen and, beside her, a larger black cockerel, both seated and facing left. The contrast of pale and dark gives the scene its calm, graphic character. It is a colour woodblock print on paper, made in Japan by Ohara Koson, with a black line block and separate blocks for colour. The image is nearly square, measuring about 24 by 25 centimetres, and the format is known as shikishiban. The print is dated between 1900 and 1936. Koson was a Japanese painter and print designer working in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
On your wall: The strong black-and-white pairing and gentle, domestic subject suit a hallway, kitchen, study or bedroom, particularly where a small touch of Japanese art is welcome.
