This Japanese colour woodblock print shows white and magenta-pink chrysanthemums over stylised, flowing blue water. The black background lets the blooms and the rippling lines of the stream stand out clearly. The image was made with a black line block combined with blocks of colour, printed on paper. Ohara Koson is named on the print as its designer, and it was published by Watanabe Shōzaburō in Tokyo. Koson's signature and seal appear on the sheet. Koson worked in the shin-hanga and shinsaku-hanga movements, which gave new life to the traditional woodblock print.
On your wall: The dark ground and clear pink, white and blue suit a calm living room, a study or a bedroom, especially where a single, focused picture is wanted.
