About this artwork

This woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida, dated 1929, shows two maiko standing in front of a red shrine building. One wears a blue kimono and the other pink, and their soft colours stand out against the strong red of the architecture. Weeping cherry blossoms spill over the scene. Yoshida is best known as a shin-hanga printmaker, and is especially admired for his landscapes. Here his attention turns to people, set within a spring scene in the traditional woodblock manner.

On your wall: The red, blue and pink palette suits living rooms, hallways and quiet corners where a touch of colour is welcome, and sits well alongside calm, neutral walls.
