About this artwork

This 1929 print by Hiroshi Yoshida shows Kagurazaka Street at night, once the rain has passed. It belongs to the series "Twelve Scenes of Tokyo" and is a woodblock print, a medium Yoshida worked in throughout his career. It is associated with shin-hanga, the style in which he is regarded as one of the leading artists, alongside Hasui Kawase. Yoshida was especially known for his landscape prints, and this nocturnal city view shows how the genre can turn to an urban setting as readily as to open country.

On your wall: Its night-time street scene suits a study, hallway or living room where a calm, atmospheric picture would complement both traditional and modern interiors.
