This colour woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro II dates from around 1810, in Japan's Edo period. The title tells us what to look for: a geisha standing beside the case that holds her shamisen, the three-stringed instrument associated with her work. Woodblock prints of this kind are made by cutting designs into blocks of wood and printing each colour in turn onto paper, which gives the image its flat, clear areas of tone and its confident outlines. The work is now part of the Japanese art collection at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its single figure and graceful, restrained subject suit a calm living room, study or hallway, and sit well alongside natural wood and simple, uncluttered furnishings.
