This colour woodblock print shows two courtesans, Karagoto and Nishikido, both associated with the Chojiya. It is the work of Kitagawa Utamaro II and comes from Japan, made in the late 1800s and rooted in the artistic culture of the Edo period (1615–1868). Woodblock printing built an image from carved blocks inked in different colours and pressed onto paper, which allowed a design to be reproduced and shared widely. Here, that process is used to present two named figures in a single composition.
On your wall: It would suit a study, dining room or calm hallway, particularly in interiors that favour Japanese art or a restrained, thoughtful atmosphere.
