This woodblock print by Hiroshi Yoshida dates from 1940 and is titled Sochu China, with Suzhou and boats among its subjects. Yoshida was a leading figure of the shin-hanga style and is known above all for his landscapes. He travelled widely and often turned his attention to places beyond Japan, rendering them in the traditional Japanese woodblock manner. This print belongs to that body of work, bringing a Chinese scene into the language of Japanese printmaking.
