This colour woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro II shows The Lovers Okiku and Kozuke, as its title tells us. It was made in Japan during the Edo period, which ran from 1615 to 1868, and dates to the middle of the 1800s. The work belongs to the tradition of Japanese printmaking, and today it is part of the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is a quiet, focused subject: two named figures, presented together as a pair.
On your wall: It would sit well in a study, bedroom or hallway, particularly in rooms that favour Japanese art or a calm, personal feel.
