About this artwork

This colour woodblock print was made in Japan during the Edo period, around 1793. Kitagawa Utamaro was well known for close-up portraits of beautiful women, a category of images called bijinga. This print belongs to a series that links a woman's physical appearance to her personality, and it invites us to compare the attractions of different figures. The title tells us which type we are looking at here: the flirtatious one. Utamaro is still regarded as one of the finest designers of ukiyo-e prints, and his large-headed portraits of the 1790s are among his best-known work.

On your wall: A figure portrait on this scale suits a study, a quiet sitting room or a bedroom, where it can be enjoyed up close and add a note of Japanese tradition.
