Goldfish is a colour woodblock print in the large oban format, made in Japan around 1802 by Kitagawa Utamaro. Utamaro lived from about 1753 to 1806 and is among the most highly regarded designers of ukiyo-e prints and paintings. He is best known for his 1790s portraits of beautiful women, shown in close, large-headed compositions, though he also turned to nature, including illustrated books of insects. The print is now in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago.
On your wall: Its gentle, finely drawn subject suits a study, living room, hallway or quiet corner, especially in calm interiors that welcome Japanese art.
