Shibata Zeshin, 1850
Towering crags in brown and ochre rise above a cluster of thatched houses, a quiet landscape of rock and rooftops.

This Japanese landscape painting shows a village tucked in at the foot of steep, towering rocks. The crags are painted in browns and ochres, and the thatched houses sit small beneath them, which gives a sense of how closely the village is held by the stone. The surface may be lacquer, a medium closely linked with the artist Shibata Zeshin, who was known as a lacquer painter and print artist of the late Edo and early Meiji periods. A wide cream border surrounds the scene and gives the landscape plenty of room.
On your wall: Its warm browns, ochres and soft cream border suit a study, living room or hallway where a calm, earthy landscape can sit comfortably.

Shibata Zeshin was a Japanese lacquer painter and print artist who worked in the late Edo period and the early Meiji era. He has been called Japan's greatest lacquerer. His standing as a painter and printmaker is more debated at home, though he is well regarded and closely studied in Britain and the United States.
