About this artwork

This album leaf by Shibata Zeshin is painted in ink and colour. It shows a dark, crouching figure, or perhaps a creature, with a pale face. Long streaks trail from it like wind-blown straw, which gives the shape a sense of movement. The leaf is set on a gold mounting border that frames the dark ink and brings out the pale face. The work is titled simply Painting and is listed as depicting a man. Zeshin was a Japanese lacquer painter and print artist of the late Edo period and early Meiji era.

On your wall: The dark ink, pale face and gold border suit a study, a hallway or a quiet corner, especially in calm rooms where a single striking figure can hold attention.
