About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai dates from 1814 and belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition of Edo-period Japan. As the title tells us, it shows young women paying homage at a shrine, and a paper lantern is among the details a viewer will find. It is described as nishiki-e, the term for multicoloured woodblock printing, and also as egoyomi, a type of pictorial calendar print. Hokusai is best known for his landscapes, yet here his attention turns to people and a moment of ritual. The original is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its gentle subject and delicate print character suit a calm study, a hallway or a bedroom, especially in homes that favour quiet, considered decoration.
