This colour woodblock print is part of a triptych made in the Edo period. It shows a lively scene of people chasing fireflies. One boy has waded into a stream after his quarry, while a younger child watches expectantly. A young woman thrusts her fan into the air, hoping to catch one of the insects. At the centre, a girl looks closely at the fireflies inside her elegantly carved cage. A willow tree gives its name to the scene, and the setting is night.
On your wall: Its night-time scene and gentle, playful subject suit a quiet living room, a bedroom or a hallway, especially where Japanese art is already part of the decor.

Kitagawa Utamaro was a Japanese artist, widely regarded as one of the finest designers of ukiyo-e woodblock prints and paintings. He is best known for his bijin ōkubi-e, close, large-headed portraits of beautiful women, created during the 1790s. He also turned his attention to nature, notably in illustrated books of insects.
