About this artwork

Painted in 1750, this work shows a white cockatoo resting on a pine branch. Itō Jakuchū worked in the mid-Edo period, when Japan had closed itself off from the outside world, and birds were among his favourite subjects, chickens above all. His paintings often drew on traditional Japanese themes while trying out bold ideas with perspective and other strikingly modern touches. The painting is now held by the Museum of Fine Arts Boston.

On your wall: A single bird on a branch suits a calm living room, a study or a quiet bedroom, particularly where you like natural subjects and uncluttered walls.

About Itō Jakuchū

Itō Jakuchū was a Japanese painter who worked in the mid-Edo period, when Japan had closed itself off from the outside world. Many of his paintings take traditional Japanese subjects, chickens and other birds above all. Though rooted in tradition, much of his work experiments boldly with perspective and shows strikingly modern stylistic touches.
