This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige dates from 1857 and belongs to his series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo. It shows people with umbrellas and straw hats crossing a wooden bridge in heavy rain, while a man poles a raft on the river. It is a ukiyo-e print in the meisho-e tradition, a genre of famous views, made with ink on paper. It is counted among Hiroshige's best known prints.
On your wall: Its rain-swept scene and quiet river setting suit a calm living room, study or hallway, particularly where Japanese art or restrained, natural interiors are already at home.

Utagawa Hiroshige, born Andō Tokutarō and also known as Andō Hiroshige, was a Japanese artist who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition. He is regarded as the last great master of that tradition, and his name remains closely tied to the form. His prints are a fine way to bring that heritage into a home.
