About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Kobayashi Kiyochika dates from around 1879 and, as its title says, looks towards Ryōgoku from Motoyanagi Bridge. Kiyochika was an ukiyo-e artist whose work recorded Japan's rapid change during the Meiji period. He is known for using light and shade in a way inspired by Western art, a approach called kōsen-ga. Many collectors regard his prints as among the last significant examples of ukiyo-e. This one belongs to a group of Ryōgoku Bridge views in the Japanese print tradition.

On your wall: A calm city view like this suits a study, hallway or living room, particularly in spaces where Japanese art or quieter, traditional decor is already part of the setting.

About Kobayashi Kiyochika

Kobayashi Kiyochika was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, known for colour woodblock prints and newspaper illustrations made during the Meiji period (1868–1912). His work records Japan's rapid modernisation, from red-brick buildings and trains to scenes of the First Sino-Japanese War. He used light and shade inspired by Western art, and many collectors regard his prints as the last significant ukiyo-e.
