About this artwork

This colour woodblock print by Keisai Eisen is titled The Courtesan Hanamurasaki of the Tsuchiya, and it centres on a single named woman from the pleasure quarters. It dates from the early or mid 1830s, during Japan's Edo period. Eisen was an ukiyo-e artist who specialised in bijin-ga, pictures of beautiful women, and this print belongs to that tradition. Woodblock printing built the image from carved blocks and layers of colour, giving the work its clear outlines and flat, deliberate areas of tone. The original is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On your wall: It would sit well in a study, hallway, bedroom or living room, particularly where a figure-led piece of Japanese art would add some quiet character.
