This colour woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro II dates from 1805, in Japan's Edo period. Its title points to Bunraku, the traditional puppet theatre, and the scene is built around that performance. Woodblock prints of this kind were made by cutting designs into blocks and printing the colours in layers, which gives the surface its crisp lines and flat, clear areas of colour. It is a good piece for anyone drawn to Japanese theatre and printmaking.
On your wall: Its Japanese subject and print tradition suit a study, a reading corner or a calm living room, especially alongside natural wood and quiet, neutral furnishings.
