About this artwork
Utagawa Kunisada made this colour woodblock print in Japan during the Edo period, sometime between 1844 and 1848. The title, First Bonito of the Year, suggests a seasonal theme, and the print belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition of popular woodblock design. Kunisada, also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III, was one of the most popular and prolific print designers of nineteenth-century Japan, and in his own lifetime his reputation outshone that of Hokusai, Hiroshige and Kuniyoshi. The original is held in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
On your wall: It would suit a study, hallway or dining room where a piece of Japanese printmaking can bring a quiet, characterful note to the space.
