About this artwork

Hiroshi Yoshida made this work in 1926, and its title points to sailing boats on the water in the forenoon. Yoshida was a Japanese painter and woodblock printmaker, and he is regarded, alongside Hasui Kawase, as one of the leading artists of the shin-hanga style. He was especially noted for his landscapes. He travelled widely, curious to see how other cultures approached art and to depict the landscapes he found along the way. This piece belongs to that landscape tradition, with boats as its subject.

On your wall: Boats and open water suit a calm living room, hallway or study, and sit comfortably in bedrooms or any space where a quiet, airy landscape is welcome.
