This is a marine work by Ivan Aivazovsky, dated 1851. The title points to a shoreline, so the subject is the edge where sea meets land, a theme at the heart of the marine art for which the painter is known. Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter, born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, where he was mostly based. The work is painted in oil on canvas and is held in the Russian Museum.
