Painted in 1849, this is a marine work by Ivan Aivazovsky, the Russian Romantic painter known for his seascapes. The title sets the scene: a stormy sea at night, with a sailing ship out on the water. Aivazovsky worked in oil on canvas, a medium well suited to the depth of a night sky and the movement of waves. Today the painting belongs to the Pavlovsk Museum-Preserve.
On your wall: Its dramatic night sea and sailing ship suit a study, library, hallway or living room where a darker, atmospheric landscape can anchor the space.
