Thomas Cole is best known for scenes of untamed American wilderness, but here he turns to a pastoral view of cultivated land. The painting shows New Hampshire's White Mountains, a region he visited and painted many times, as did other landscape artists of the nineteenth century. A church spire stands out at middle distance, pointing to the place of religion in farming communities, while the glow of the low sun suggests optimism for rural America. It is an ideal, though, that was drifting further from reality, as the country was changing through rapid urbanisation and the Industrial Revolution. Painted in oil on canvas in 1839.
On your wall: Its calm pastoral scene and warm low light suit living rooms, studies and quiet hallways where a landscape can bring a sense of space and stillness.

Thomas Cole was an Anglo-American painter who founded the Hudson River School, a movement that gave American landscape its own voice. He painted romantic landscapes alongside history paintings, mostly in oil on canvas. European painters shaped his work, yet it carries a distinctly American sensibility, and he remained prolific throughout his career.
