Winslow Homer painted The Bright Side in 1865, the closing year of the American Civil War. It shows four African American teamsters of the Union Army sitting on the sunny side of a Sibley tent, a moment of rest away from their work. The title points to the warmth of the spot they have chosen. Homer made the picture in oil paint on canvas, and it now belongs to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, where it is shown at the M. H. de Young Memorial Museum.
On your wall: Its sunlit, human scene suits a study, hallway or living room where a quiet, narrative picture can be looked at closely.

Winslow Homer was an American painter and illustrator, working mainly with landscape subjects and best known for his scenes of the sea. He is regarded as one of the leading painters of nineteenth-century America, and as an important figure in American art more broadly. His marine paintings remain the work most closely associated with his name.
