Winslow Homer painted this double portrait in oil on canvas in 1876. It shows two young African-American women in a cotton field, standing tall and composed. Their expressions are calm and almost still, with only the faintest trace of sadness. The painting suggests a weariness and disillusion: they worked the cotton before the war, and they are still working it afterwards. It is a work of genre art, a scene of everyday labour rendered with dignity. It is now in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
On your wall: Its grounded subject and rural setting suit a study, library, hallway or living room where a thoughtful, figure-led picture can be given space.

Winslow Homer was an American painter and illustrator, working mainly with landscape subjects and best known for his scenes of the sea. He is regarded as one of the leading painters of nineteenth-century America, and as an important figure in American art more broadly. His marine paintings remain the work most closely associated with his name.
