Painted in oil on canvas in 1886, Eight Bells shows two sailors working out their ship's latitude. It belongs to Winslow Homer's marine art, the body of work for which he is best known. It was the last of his major paintings of the 1880s to chronicle, with real drama, the relationship between people and the ocean. It is counted among his best-known paintings and is held today at the Addison Gallery of American Art.
On your wall: Its sea-going subject suits a study, hallway, living room or dining room, especially where a nautical or traditional note is welcome.
