About this artwork

Turner painted this view of the Valley of Aosta in a snowstorm between 1836 and 1837. The title tells us the subject: a mountain valley caught in wintry weather, where snow and atmosphere shape the whole scene. It is oil on canvas, made by the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851), who was admired for his expressive handling of light and atmosphere and his bold use of colour in landscape. Those qualities make a stormy Alpine subject a natural fit for his work. The painting is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.

On your wall: Its wintry Alpine subject and stormy mood suit a living room, study or hallway where a dramatic landscape can draw the eye and set a contemplative tone.
