This is a sketch made in 1888 by Albert Bierstadt, painted in oil on cardboard. As its title tells us, it was prepared for "The Last of the Buffalo", and it offers a glimpse of an idea at an early stage, before the final composition. Bierstadt is best known for large landscapes of the American West, and this study belongs to that world of western subjects. The work is held today at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
On your wall: Its western subject and the loose character of a sketch suit a study, a library or a quiet living room, especially alongside warm wood and natural textures.

Albert Bierstadt was a German-American artist, remembered above all for his monumental landscapes of the American West. His paintings present the region on a grand scale and celebrate its scenery, drawing the eye to wide horizons and the sheer size of the land.
