Caspar David Friedrich painted this landscape in 1822, in oil on canvas. It is a panoramic view across open plains, with mountains rising in the background. In the foreground, a solitary oak tree commands the scene and gives the eye a place to rest before it travels out into the distance. The work belongs to Romanticism, the movement in which Friedrich is best known, and is held at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin. The original is modest in size, measuring 55 × 71 centimetres.
On your wall: Its calm, open landscape suits a living room, study or bedroom, particularly where you would like a quiet focal point above a desk, sofa or bed.

Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, widely regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His work is often symbolic and turns away from classical ideals, expressing a personal, emotional response to nature. He frequently painted contemplative figures set against night skies, morning mists, bare trees or Gothic ruins.
