About this artwork

Painted in 1818, this oil on canvas is a nocturne with the feel of a cityscape. Two women in dark dresses are seen from behind on a balcony. Beyond them stands a Gothic church with twin spires, and the masts of ships crowd the harbour below in the fading light. Placing quiet figures before an evening view is typical of Friedrich's Romantic work, which often invites the viewer to share a contemplative look outwards. The painting belongs to the Hermitage Museum.

On your wall: Its dusky tones and calm harbour scene suit a bedroom, study or quiet sitting room where a contemplative mood is welcome.
