After the Rain is a landscape painted in 1879 by Arkhip Kuindzhi, the Russian painter born in 1841, who died in 1910. The title points to the quiet that follows a shower, a moment when the weather has turned and the landscape is left to recover. Today the work belongs to the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, where it has been counted among the gallery's nineteenth-century landscape paintings. It has also featured in an exhibition of Kuindzhi's work called "Illusion of Light", a fitting phrase for a painter whose landscapes are so often discussed in terms of light.
On your wall: Its landscape subject and calm, post-rain theme suit living rooms, studies and quiet corners where a natural scene can set a thoughtful tone.
