Painted in 1865, Oaks is a landscape by Ivan Shishkin, the Russian Realist best known for his views of the natural world. As the title tells us, the trees are the subject, and the work invites a slow, attentive look at them. It is executed in oil paint on wood and is held today in the Russian Museum. Shishkin was a founding member of the Peredvizhniki, and landscape remained central to his career.
On your wall: A quiet landscape of trees, it would sit comfortably in a study, library or sitting room, especially where natural, earthy surroundings are welcome.
