Caspar David Friedrich painted Der einsame Baum in 1822, working in oil on canvas. It is a panoramic landscape of open plains, with mountains in the distance. A solitary oak dominates the foreground and draws the eye first, before the view opens out towards the horizon. The painting belongs to Romanticism, the movement in which Friedrich worked, and it is held today in the Alte Nationalgalerie. It is a modest size, measuring 55 × 71 centimetres, which suits the calm, contemplative feel of the scene.
On your wall: Its wide, tranquil landscape suits living rooms, studies and bedrooms, or any quiet corner where a view into the distance is welcome.

Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, widely regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His work is often symbolic and turns away from classical ideals, expressing a personal, emotional response to nature. He frequently painted contemplative figures set against night skies, morning mists, bare trees or Gothic ruins.
