The title tells us what to look for: a countryside setting, a peasant and the animals in his care. It is an oil painting on fabric, made in the Netherlands in the 1850s by Alexander Joseph Daiwaille. Daiwaille is better known as a portrait painter, so it is interesting to see him turn his attention to open land and rural life here. The painting now belongs to the Cleveland Museum of Art, where it is part of the Modern European Painting and Sculpture collection.
On your wall: A pastoral landscape like this suits a living room, study or hallway, where a calm rural scene can bring a sense of space to the wall.

Alexander Joseph Daiwaille was a Dutch painter who worked as a portraitist. His name is linked with portraiture, the art of capturing a person's likeness on canvas. If you enjoy paintings centred on people, his work offers a thoughtful way to bring a human presence into your home.
