Painted in 1891, this landscape shows a wood at Peterhof, named in the title after Countess Mordvinova. Ivan Shishkin worked in oil on canvas, and the picture belongs to the Tretyakov Gallery. Shishkin was a Russian Realist, best known for his landscapes, and a founding member of the Peredvizhniki. Here his subject is the woodland itself, a quiet scene of trees and undergrowth to explore at your own pace.
On your wall: A forest scene like this suits studies, libraries, hallways and calm living rooms, especially where natural tones and a sense of stillness are welcome.
