Albert Bierstadt's "Deer" is a painting of two animals set against a mountain backdrop. An antlered buck lies in cool, shaded grass while a second deer grazes close by. Behind them, the Western mountains catch the sunlight, so the eye moves from the dark foreground to the bright distance. Bierstadt was a German-American artist best known for large landscapes celebrating the American West, and this work shows his interest in pairing wildlife with that scenery. The painting is held in the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
On your wall: The calm subject and contrast of shade and sunlit slopes suit a living room, study or bedroom, particularly where natural, earthy tones are already in use.
