Albert Bierstadt painted this animal study in 1879. It shows the head of a buffalo, and it was made with oil paint on paper laid onto cardboard. Bierstadt is widely known for his monumental landscapes of the American West, so it is interesting to see him turn his attention to a single animal at close range. The work is now in the collection of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West.
On your wall: Its focus on a single animal gives it a calm, grounded presence, well suited to a study, a hallway or a living room with a taste for the American West.
