About this artwork

Ivan Aivazovsky painted this naval battle scene in 1846, working in oil on canvas. It shows the Battle of Wyborg Bay, with warships out on the sea, smoke rising from the fighting and a broad sky above. Aivazovsky was a Russian Romantic painter, born in the Black Sea port of Feodosia in Crimea, and is regarded as one of the great masters of marine art. This work belongs to that tradition, combining battle painting with the drama of the sea.

On your wall: Its seascape and naval subject suit a study, library, hallway or living room, particularly where traditional or maritime-minded interiors are wanted.
