Painted in 1807, this work shows a summer landscape with a couple placed within it, as the title tells us. Caspar David Friedrich made it in oil on canvas, and it belongs to the Romantic tradition of landscape painting for which he is known. Friedrich often set human figures within wide natural scenes, inviting a quiet, personal response to the world around them. Today the painting is part of the Bavarian State Painting Collections and hangs in the Neue Pinakothek.
On your wall: Its summer landscape subject suits living rooms, bedrooms and reading corners where a calm, natural scene is welcome.

Caspar David Friedrich was a German Romantic landscape painter, widely regarded as the most important German artist of his generation. His work is often symbolic and turns away from classical ideals, expressing a personal, emotional response to nature. He frequently painted contemplative figures set against night skies, morning mists, bare trees or Gothic ruins.
