George Inness, 1892
Soft, translucent colour turns an autumn landscape into something closer to a vision than a view. Inness painted it in 1892, two years before he died.

George Inness was an American landscape painter, and Sunny Autumn Day comes from the last years of his career, painted in 1892, two years before his death. He worked in oil on canvas and was remarkably prolific, producing over a thousand works across fifty years. Here the forms are blurred and the atmosphere is built from translucent colour, so the landscape feels almost like an apparition. It shows his late style well, and reflects his mystical way of seeing the natural world.
On your wall: A gentle, atmospheric landscape that suits living rooms, studies and quiet bedrooms where a calm, contemplative picture is welcome.
