In A Winter Sky, George Inness, an American landscape painter, turned his attention to light and atmosphere. He set a vibrant, glowing sunset above a stark, bleak landscape, and let colour carry the contrast. Warm pinks and yellows fill the sky, while cool blues mark the frozen ground below. Painted in oil on canvas in 1866, the work shows how two very different moods can sit together in a single view.
On your wall: Its warm pinks and yellows set against cool blues suit a living room, study or hallway, particularly where you'd like a touch of winter light on the wall.
