Akseli Gallen-Kallela painted this landscape in 1897, and the title tells us the season: autumn, just as the first snow arrives. It is an oil painting on canvas, and it belongs to the Finnish National Gallery, where it is kept at the Ateneum. Gallen-Kallela was a leading Finnish painter around the turn of the twentieth century, and his work is closely tied to the idea of a distinctly Finnish art. Here, the subject is a quiet seasonal change in the landscape.
On your wall: Its theme of late autumn and early snow suits calm living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a quiet, seasonal view of nature is welcome.
