Thomas Cole, 1830
Thomas Cole's autumnal view of Niagara Falls, painted in 1830, pairs a sweeping landscape with a thoughtful look at what it leaves out.

Thomas Cole visited Niagara Falls in May 1829 and composed this oil on wood panel the following year. It is a romanticised, autumnal scene that presents the grandeur of the American landscape. He left out the factories, scenic overlooks and hotels that had gathered around the falls in the early 19th century. Cole worried about the effects of rapacious industrialism, yet the painting also erases the harm done by colonialism and conquest on land that was Attiwonderonk, Haudenosaunee and Wenrohronon. Two Native American figures stand at the centre. Their small scale and number reinforce the false idea of a "vanishing" people, rather than acknowledging their stolen sovereignty.
On your wall: A good fit for a living room, study or hallway where a calm, naturalistic landscape with autumn tones would add depth and invite conversation.

Thomas Cole was an Anglo-American painter who founded the Hudson River School, a movement that gave American landscape its own voice. He painted romantic landscapes alongside history paintings, mostly in oil on canvas. European painters shaped his work, yet it carries a distinctly American sensibility, and he remained prolific throughout his career.
