About this artwork

Painted in 1835, this landscape shows a mountain in the Giant Mountains, known in German as the Riesengebirge, with trees and a wide sky above. Friedrich made it in oil paint on canvas. He was a German Romantic painter whose landscapes often convey a personal, emotional response to the natural world. Today the painting belongs to the National Gallery of Norway, part of the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design.

On your wall: Its mountain and sky subject suits living rooms, studies and quiet hallways where a calm, open landscape can draw the eye.
