Alvan Fisher painted this scene in oil on panel in 1816, and it is a fine example of his early rural pictures. A ferry lands two wealthy women and their belongings on the shore, while a herd of especially handsome cattle rests in the foreground. Fisher worked in Boston and was among the first American artists to specialise in landscape. He later recalled that the genre was new in that part of the country, and that he found it more profitable, more pleasant and more distinctive than portrait painting.
On your wall: Its pastoral subject suits a living room, study or dining room, particularly where traditional or country-inspired furnishings call for a quiet landscape.

Alvan Fisher was an American painter who worked in both landscape and genre painting. His work turns to the natural scenery around him as well as to scenes of everyday life, and it suits anyone who enjoys a quiet, observed view of American subjects.
